Seneca Investment Managers

Seneca Investment Managers is based in Liverpool with a national client base. Investors range from institutions such as pension funds and charities, through to financial advisers, discretionary private client managers and personal investors. The firm specialises in multi-asset value investing.

Where Seneca differs from other providers of multi-asset investment products is in its ‘value’ based approach. This means the firm prides itself on the ability to identify and invest where there is both quality and unrealised value.

Simply put, Seneca IM creates funds that combine stocks and shares in companies (equities) with fixed interest investment vehicles (bonds or debts) and a wide range of alternative assets*. Seneca believes its multi-asset value approach gives it the edge in delivering the right outcomes for its investors.

The firm has a team of six highly experienced investment professionals, seven other executive directors and staff, and four non-executive directors. Together they hold a substantial minority share in the business and have significant personal investments in the funds they manage.

Seneca Investment Managers has a heritage stretching back to 2002 when it established two multi-asset unit trusts – now open ended investment companies (OEICs) – where investors pool their money, closely followed by a multi-asset investment trust. In addition they manage segregated accounts for institutional investors.  Seneca Investment Managers was acquired by Seneca Asset Managers Ltd in 2014.

Multi-Asset Value Investing

Seneca Investment Managers is a fund management company specialising in multi-asset investing. This form of investing combines traditional securities, such as equities and bonds, with non-traditional approaches, such as alternative investments* to deliver specific outcomes.

The firm’s investment approach differs in that Seneca IM makes decisions using a value investing ethos. Seneca IM believes this approach makes it easier to achieve investor objectives and offers the prospect of superior long term returns and avoidance of permanent loss of capital.

The bible of value investing is Security Analysis, written by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd in 1934. They set out a framework for assessing the intrinsic value of stocks, then proposed that investors should only buy stocks below their intrinsic value.

At Seneca, these principles are used to assess different asset classes, select stocks and when picking third party funds, focusing on managers who employ value investing techniques. This value investing approach means that Seneca IM’s funds are actively managed and different, both from common benchmarks and from the competition.

Successful active management involves finding patterns in financial assets and taking advantage of them. Performing well for investors is about finding value and making better decisions than other investors. That is where you find the value in multi-asset investing.
